  8.     XTree for DOS has been a longtime favorite of many satisfied users.
  9.     Now they have moved to the Windows arena with XTree for Windows.
  10.  
  11.     XTree for Windows is a full graphical file and disk management tool.
  12.     Anything that can be done with files from copy and move, delete and
  13.     rename, view text and graphic files, to ZIP and unZIP, can be done
  14.     with XTree for Windows. XTree even goes further with XTree Link.
  15.     Link is the ability, using a null cable, to transfer files between
  16.     computers. Connect you desktop and laptop, and work freely with the
  17.     information on both systems. Using XTree Link, and working with
  18.     XTree for Windows and/or XTree Gold for DOS, you can achieve all
  19.     your tasks.

  21.     When you start up XTree, you see a screen that has pull-down menus,
  22.     icon bar, and directory and file information. There is also an
  23.     auto-view option that allows you to see the file as you are moving
  24.     in the file window. Press ALT-V (if you are using CTViewer), and you
  25.     will see a sample of this window. The long window on the bottom is
  26.     the Auto-View window. You can see the first line is from the README
  27.     file that is highlighted in the file window on the right side of the
  28.     screen. On the left you see all your drives. Clicking on a drive
  29.     will expand or collapse the tree. You can also accomplish this by
  30.     using the View Mode from the pull-down menu.

  32.     XTree for Windows allows you to view data files from over 50 data
  33.     applications. View spreadsheet, graphic, database, and word
  34.     processing files from many of the top programs.

  36.     The icon bar has the most popular options for your use: Copy, Move,
  37.     Delete, Rename, View, Select All, Mark, Unmark. You also have a
  38.     button on the upper left of the file window with arrows going
  39.     around. This allows you to move up one level in the file window. You
  40.     can keep going back until you are in the root directory of that
  41.     drive. As you mark files you see the amount of space that these
  42.     files are using.

  44.     I was a bit dissatisfied with the unZIP option. To work with a ZIP
  45.     you must first 'mount' it. All this requires is double-clicking on a
  46.     ZIP file. You will now see a NEW volume entry in the directory
  47.     (left-hand) window. The last entry will show, for example: *
  48.     ctm9210.zip [e:\ctm\ctm9210.zip] This is the name of the ZIP and
  49.     then where the ZIP currently resides. You will also have a file
  50.     window on the right that shows the name as above, and the files
  51.     contained in the ZIP. Now that it is mounted you can work with it.
  52.     To unZIP the above, you would click on the name in the directory
  53.     window, and then using drag-and-drop, drag the filename to the
  54.     directory you wish to uncompress it to. Then releasing it will bring
  55.     up a window where you usually would click on OK. This then
  56.     uncompresses the file. When you are finished with the ZIP file, you
  57.     MUST 'unmount' it. This requires pulling down the Volume menu and
  58.     selecting unMOUNT a ZIP. In a like fashion XTree will also allow you
  59.     to ZIP files, or add to current ZIPs.

  61.     While all of this does work, and does work fine, I would have
  62.     preferred a simple double-click on the ZIP to do all the work. I
  63.     would like to see default directory information, where I can make a
  64.     change if I want, but otherwise it would uncompress to that
  65.     directory.

  67.     XTree for Windows requires a minimum of 2.2MB hard disk space, or at
  68.     least 4.5MB for a full installation. You will need 2MB RAM, and
  69.     Windows 3.0 or higher. NOTE: XTree will NOT run in Real Mode in
  70.     Windows 3.0.

  72.     This product had a special introductory price of $49.95. Street
  73.     price was around $35-40. I do not think that price is still in
  74.     effect.
